Fishing for Pike
Pike fishing from a boat in the river Ljubljanica is our special offer. Ljubljanica is a slow carst river with a tipical U riverbed and heavy vegetation on the banks and in the water. That is why fishing for pike is mostly done from a boat. Advantages of this type of fishing are: a really detailed combing of all fishing places, virtually no snaging in the trees and very low lure loss due to hooking in submerged trees.
Season starts on May 1st and ends on October 30th when Danube salmon (Hucho hucho) season starts. Prime time for pike fishing is May, June and October, but it depends on current water levels.
What equipment to use is a thing of personal preference and with pike fishing, the possibilities are endless. Nevertheless here are some guidelines:
ROD SPIN/FLY FISH: The action must be fast to set the hook right. For spin fishing the action of the rod depends on the lures You will be casting. We suggest a minimum of 50-100 g casting weight and fast action. Rods to a lenght of 2.7 are great. You can try even longer, but can be a little clumsy in a boat. As for fly fishing on pike the normal rod is a #9 or #10, 9 ft, fast action. Casts normally are not very long, it is more precise casting that gets the fish.
REEL: Reel should hold at least 100 m of 0,35 nylon, has a good drag system and preferably the drag setter on the front side. For fly fishing we suggest a reel that complements the rod you will use for fishing.
LURES: More lures, more possibilities. It is important to have different types and colours since pikes preferences can change a lot in the day. But there are some all time favourites: red-head silicones or tied flies, spoons, Mepps with some red tags, woblers. Try to have a type for different depths. Big lures are a plus (20 cm+). Our guide will have with himself some lures just in case, so don't overpack. ;) It is quite easy to overthink it with the lures, and to forget why you are on the water. To enjoy fishing.
OTHER: Traces are important. Better to give more money for a better trace, than to lose a nice fish. Our guides usually use fluorocarbon traces 0,9 diameter, with about 40-50 cm length. Swivels and other small connections should be stron enough to tame even a big fish. Don't go micro and then fear of losing the fish of a lifetime. Which line to use is a thing of preference and how it goes allong with other components on your fishing system. Nylon should be at least 0,30 diameter (better bigger to have more power when preventing the fish to run in cover), mono and braid is also good. Again, depends on the whole system. When fly fishing we suggest a floating or intermediate sink line for pike fly fishing. Polarized glasses are a big advantage.
CLOTHING: We suggest to consult our guides before picking what to wear on your fishing trip. It depends a lot on current conditions and it is impossible to give a universal tip. Think comfortable with possibilities of rain.
